Yuks General at ALA 2014

Before ALA began, I’d contacted Yuks General to schedule a shoot, as I’d seen previews of her Lu Ling Qi cosplay and really wanted to shoot it. We ended up doing shoots each day for each of her cosplays, and also a couple of her friends too.

Saturday: Jinx, with G2 as Jax, Ichi Rohai as Yasuo, Ren Fawnlet as Annie. This was the first time I’ve done a shoot with a group, but fortunately my light was up to the task, once I’d turned up the power just a bit higher than I normally set it at.

Sunday: Judal, with David the Han as Kouen. For this shoot, the battery for my remote trigger died so I couldn’t use my dish (that was a little embarrassing). Still, there was plenty of light from the sun and I’d picked out an area that was well shaded, so the shots still turned out pretty well.

JS, Lychii, Mika, and Usagiko at ALA 2014

During ALA I ran into a few cosplayers I hadn’t seen before, and did a few quick mini-shoots with them (except for Lychii, who’d I contacted ahead of time to do a shoot of her Princess Hilda).

With JS and Lychii, I was able to bring out my Einstein light and play with a few different angles. The scythe was a bit of challenge to fit in the frame, but I really like how the shots came out. With Lychii’s Hilda shoot, I think I should have tried to get more of the background lighting in. The area had some hanging lanterns that would’ve made for a more interesting backdrop, but they were really dim, so it would’ve been a challenge to balance with the fill light.

I came across Mika, Twerkette and Usagiko at the hotel’s pool area, so I only had my flash to work with, but I think I still managed to work with that and get good shots. Although my flash did run out of batteries mid-shoot with Usagiko, so that was a little embarrassing. Good thing I’d brought spares.

Tashi Cakes at ALA 2014

While at ALA, I got the chance to do a few mini-shoots with Tashi Cakes and her friend as swimsuit Asuka Langley and Rei Ayanami from Evangelion.

Fortunately for us, we were able to get a few pictures at the hot tub while it was (mostly) empty. It was in the shade too, so I avoided dealing with direct sunlight. Later the next day, we also gave a night shoot a try at the hotel pool. Since the area was lit with green and blue, I wanted to see if I could get some nice pictures out of it in the background. I only had my flash to provide fill, and I do like how the lighting turned out, although in hindsight I should’ve tried a couple shots with brighter flash power.
